OVERVIEW

Breathing Garden is a community based responsive installation that amplifies the breathing rhythms, organic forms and sensory qualities of plants to create a calming and restorative experience. Environmental, proximity and touch sensors translate human presence and changing conditions into light, inflation, mist and a live digital interface. Installed in a community garden, the work invited local residents to approach, observe and care for a hybrid botanical system, exploring how physical computing can support sensory connection and community wellbeing.

INTERACTION & EXPERIENCE

Driven by Arduino controlled air pumps, the structure dynamically inflates and deflates, physically simulating the rhythmic breathing of a living organism.

Integrated sensors translate human approach and physical touch into dynamic LED feedback, mimicking the responsive nervous system of a biological plant.

Atomizers release programmed aromatic vapor, mimicking botanical transpiration while actively regulating spatial humidity to induce a restorative, relaxing state.

A web interface allows neighbors to interact, monitor, and care for the cyber plant online, transforming the physical installation into a shared community garden.
